Cyberbullying

Filed under: Internet Safety @ 9:53 am and

Alarmingly, instances of “Cyberbullying” are becoming more frequent as students increasingly use social networking sites, online chat software, email and SMS texting to communicate with friends and peers and build their social relationship networks.  According to an outstanding website from Wired Kids, Inc., entitled “Stop Cyberbullying”, cyberbullying “is when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones”  (http://www.stopcyberbullying.org/what_is_cyberbullying_exactly.html).

The Stop Cyberbullying website (http://www.stopcyberbullying.org/index2.html) has a wealth of information for students, parents, teachers, and even law enforcement.

Read the parent information and teacher information at:

Ask your children/students the important question, “Are you a Cyberbully?”

Internet Safety and the Technology Department

The Academia Cotopaxi Technology Department is committed promoting “a safe, secure and caring environment” for your students.  We will use our technological resources to further this Academia Cotopaxi mission.  Our Academia Cotopaxi AUP rules apply to students at all times on the AC campus.  Further, in my role as AC Director of Technology, I will work with AC principals, teachers and parents to take appropriate steps to address student actions using technology outside of the AC campus if and when we determine that these actions are “intended to have an effect on a student” and “adversely affect the safety and well-being of a student while in school” (http://www.stopcyberbullying.org/what_is_cyberbullying_exactly.html).  Especially in the case of cyberbullying, if it happens off-campus we reserve the right to impose consequences on campus.
